About the Concert

Christmastime is a season for wonders and incredible adventures, when the most devout wishes are carried out. Is not it a miracle when one may, for an evening, be translated to a fairy town in a far country and pass the evening away in the company of a notable storyteller? That miracle can be performed by artists of Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. They invite you to be transported to Christmas London to see Oscar Wilde, who will tell you his famous stories.

Evening with Oscar Wilde is a spectacular in which musical numbers are inscribed in plots of three stories. The main ideas of Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose, The Happy Prince and The Star Child were translated into music of various vocal and instrumental compositions. Among them there are the well-known Albinoni’s Adagio, Elegy by Massenet, Nemorino’s romance from the opera L'elisir d'amore, and Lullaby by Tchaikovsky. The audience will be able to enjoy delicate French vocal miniatures by Debussy and Saint-Saëns, lieder by Schubert and Stöhr, salon pieces for strings by Kreisler and Vieuxtemps, and the touching Ave Maria by William Gomez, a contemporary Gibraltar guitarist.

Besides the storyteller Wilde, a hostess, opera singers and musicians, the festive atmosphere of the event is to be supported by a vocal quartet that will sing popular Christmas carols in four parts.
