About the Concert

The soloist of the Russian music evening When Autumn Leaves Are Waltzing is soprano Elena Razgulyaeva, People’s Artist of Russia.

Graduate of the Glazunov Petrozavodsk State Conservatory, she appeared on the stage of the Rostov Music Theatre from 2004 to 2010 and then acted as a soloist at the Astrakhan State Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 2015 Elena Razgulyaeva was a guest singer at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. She toured over Great Britain, the USA, Ireland, Spain, and Portugal and was nominated for Best Women Role in Opera at the Golden Mask National Theatre Festival.

In the autumn of 2019 she joined the opera company of the Primorsky Stage. The Vladivostok audience appreciates her powerful voice and her dramatic approach to the roles of Tosca, Lisa and Tatiana as well as Elisabeth de Valois in Don Carlos by Giuseppe Verdi in the season of 2020-2021.

During this concert Elena Razgulyaeva will represent a large chamber program which she has prepared together with Alexey Tikhomirov, a Saint Petersburg pianist. The true romance pearls will be sung, including those by Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, Rachmaninoff, and others.

Artists of the Primorsky Stage orchestra will perform some string quartets by the same composers including the famous Nocturne from the Second Quartet by Borodin, which is a intimate composition dedicated to the 20th anniversary of his declaration of love, and a movement from the First Quartet by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, which was a riot when premiered in 1871; Andante cantabile from the First Quartet moved Leo Tolstoy to tears.

Some composition will be played, which was not known for a long time. For example, Molto moderato in polonaise time from the Quartet in G major by Rimsky-Korsakov was performed during a private concert in 1897. However, the composer’s wife did not like it, and Rimsky-Korsakov opted not to publish the score. The first performance took place in June 1949, and the score was published in 1955.

The First (Uncompleted) Quartet by Sergei Rachmaninoff became known after the author’s death. He wrote it when he was a 17-year-old student of the Moscow Conservatory and carried on the quartet traditions of Tchaikovsky and such composers of the Great Five as Balakirev and Borodin.

The concert program also includes floaty piano pieces (such as Rachmaninoff’s Etude-Tableaux and Preludes and Tchaikovsky’s Romance), Rachmaninoff’s famous Vocalise arranged for trombone, Glazunov’s Grand Adagio from Raymonda, and Gliére’s Intermezzo for horn.
