The Ballet Company of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre has successfully toured in St Petersburg

The Primorsky Stage Ballet’s tour in Saint Petersburg has been a great success. Its success was brilliantly witnessed by full halls and storms of applause. This time the Primorsky Stage brought on tour both classical and rarely performed ballet productions.

On July 30 and July 31, 2022, the Primorsky Stage presented Fikret Amirov’s A Thousand and One Nights choreographed by Eldar Aliev, Honored Artistic Creator of Russia. The baton was held by Ayyub Guliyev, Honored Artist of the Republic of Azerbaijan. “The production is colorful, musical and exotic and enjoys great interest from the public, performers and critics,” Eldar Aliev noted. The first ballet performance was attended by Valery Gergiev, Artistic Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, who highly appreciated the Azerbaijani composer’s music, interesting choreography and special sounding of the Mariinsky Orchestra.

On August 2, August 3 and August 7, 2022, the Primorsky Stage Ballet presented the fairy ballet The Sleeping Beauty to the Saint Petersburg audience. Anton Torbeev conducted all the performances.

Besides, the tour program included Philip Glass’s extravagant ballet Phaedra choreographed by Flemming Flindt, a Danish master of ballet. “We invited the choreographer Jacob Sparso to shift Flemming Flindt’s production to the Primorsky Stage, and the performance nicely blended in with the company because the ballet personages found vivid stage embodiments created by our soloists. We worried, but the performance was a success. It is very felicitous, beautiful and extraordinary. The light design is a pure joy,” said Eldar Aliev. In Saint Petersburg, the production was first performed in May 2022. During the summer tour, the Primorsky Stage Ballet presented the one-act ballet Phaedra on the Historic Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre on August 4, 2022 together with The Firebird choreographed by Eldar Aliev. The performances were conducted by Vladislav Karklin and Anton Torbeev respectively.

On August 5, August 6, August 11 and August 12, 2022, Adolphe Adam’s Le Corsaire was performed. On August 9, August 10 and August 14, 2022, the Saint Petersburg audience first enjoyed the unique Far East version of The Nutcracker originally choreographed by Eldar Aliev. “This version is not performed anywhere in Russia. It is performed in Western Europe, has been performed in the USA, is prepared for being staged in Asia, but has never been presented by Russian theatres,” said Eldar Aliev, Ballet Artistic Director of the Primorsky Stage. The baton was held by Anton Torbeev.
