Guide to events at the Primorsky Stage in November

The November playbill of the Primorsky Stage includes Russian operas, classical ballets and an extraordinary gala concert at which some dance acts from legendary operas will be performed.

The main events are to be one of the most performed Russian operas in the world Boris Godunov on November 11, 2022 and the Gala concert on November 13, 2022.

Most spectators dream of hearing Modest Musorgsky’s masterpiece, and to perform the role of Boris Godunov is a dream of all opera basses throughout the world. There exist about ten various versions of the opera. The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre presents the initial version composed in 1869, which reflects Musorgsky’s original idea to the utmost. It is the protagonist who is brought into focus; the opera begins with a decision to crown Boris Godunov and ends with his death. On November 11, 2022, the primary role will be performed by Sergey Sevastyanov, a soloist of the Primorsky Stage.

On November 13, 2022, the Gala concert will be given. For the first time at the Primorsky Stage, the Polovtsian act from Alexander Borodin’s opera Prince Igor and the Overture and Polish act from Mikhail Glinka’s opera A Life for the Tsar will be performed.

The Polovtsian act is one of the best scenes in the opera Prince Igor. The music of the Polovtsian Dances is characterized by elemental force, and their choreography is done by grace and plasticity. The chorus of captive women singing the famous song “Fly away on the wings of the wind” immerses the audience in images of the boundless steppe. The poetic song, which is filled with Oriental tones and involves a graceful dance, is well known all over the world.

The Polish act from the opera A Life for the Tsar is an effective dance suite. The audience will be able to enjoy the Polonaise accompanied by a female chorus, the vehement Krakowiak, the lyrical Waltz, and the Mazurka.

The chorus, opera and ballet soloists and the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage under the baton of Pavel Smelkov, Principal Conductor of the Primorsky Stage, will take part in the Gala concert.

The series of Russian operas will be continued with Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Mazepa on November 18 and 20, 2022 and The Queen of Spades on November 27, 2022 and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride on November 25, 2022. The legacy of Tchaikovsky is also represented by the classical ballets Swan Lake on November 17, 2022 and The Sleeping Beauty on November 24, 2022.
