About the Concert

In the history of Russian music Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov has become known as a 'storyteller' and creator of musical seascapes. In his youth the budding composer studied in the Navy Cadets, from 1862 to 1865 he served as a garde-marine and midshipman on the "Almaz" clipper and sailed along the coast of America. Later, having chosen music as his profession, Rimsky-Korsakov created picturesque depictions of the sea in the orchestral suite Scheherazade, the opera Sadko, and the Tale of the Tsar Saltan. Most popular of the opera Sadko's numbers are the Three Songs of the Guests (sea merchants) from the second act in which the characters tell of their homeland and of the sea. Each character in the scene is musically depicted: the harsh Northern sea of the Varangian guest is illustrated by the powerful sound of brass instruments; the languor that reigns over the treasures of the South Seas of the Indian Guest is evoked by the florid melodies of the woodwind section. In the song of the Venetian Guest the slow fist section in the style of a barcarole ("the city of stone, mother to all...") is replaced by a lively rondo ("wonderful city, happy city...") that reminds one of Italian dance melodies.

The theme of maritime travel was developed on a large scale in the adventurous literature of the 19 th Century. One of the key figures of this genre was Jules Vern whose novel The Children of Captain Grant is still extremely popular today. A film was made of the same name in 1936 and was the first Soviet dramatization of the novel. The success of the film was not least due to the brilliant, memorable song by Isaak Dunaevsky using words by Vasily Lebedev-Kumach. The songs of Paganela ("There once was an intrepid Captain...") and Roberta ("Give us a Song, Sing Cheerful Wind...") have for many decades lived an independent existence, becoming classic examples of the genre.
