Verdi Marathon Starts at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre

The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre presents the music project Verdi Marathon, which will unite operas and special events to be held in honor of the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi from February 14, 2025 to March 7, 2025.

The opera part of the project comprises the most often performed and well-known compositions by the Italian maestro. Within the first week of the Marathon, the audiences will be able to enjoy La traviata on February 14, 2025, Rigoletto on February 15, 2025, and Don Carlo on February 16, 2025. The primary parts will be performed by opera soloists of the Primorsky Stage such as Olga Zharikova, Alexei Kostyuk, César Méndez, Mingiyan Odzhaev, Sergey Krylov, Alisa Fedorenko, Sergei Pleshivtsev, Medet Chotabayev, Dmitry Migulyov, Yevgeny Plekhanov, Liliya Kadnikova, and Natalia Yakimova.

On February 20, 2025, the opera Macbeth after William Shakespeare’s tragedy of the same name with its medieval magnetic charm will become a long-awaited event for the public. Such soloists as Alexei Repin, Yevgeny Plekhanov, Alena Diyanova, Dagvadorj Davaasuren, and Roman Krukovich will bring to life the vivid images in the performance. On March 5, 2025, the audiences will also be able to enjoy Aida, one of the most large-scale productions from the Verdi’s repertoire. Such opera singers as Alena Diyanova, Tatiana Makarchuk, Dagvadorj Davaasuren, Bat-Erdene Dorjtseden, Gennady Akhmedov, and Sergei Pleshivtsev will appear in the performance.

The concert part of the project will open with Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi. On February 23, 2025, the heartfelt sacred composition – it is also called “an opera in ecclesiastical robes” – will be performed by opera soloists, the Chorus and The Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage. Another musical surprise will be presented by the Primorsky Stage for the audiences on March 1, 2025, when Il trovatore, one of the most emotionally charged operas by the composer, will be performed in concert.

On March 7, 2025, Verdi Marathon will culminate in the large-scale concert Gala Verdi. Opera soloists of the Primorsky Stage will perform best solo and ensemble pieces from Verdi’s operas not included in the repertoire of the Theatre, such as Nabucco, Attila, I masnadieri, Luisa Miller, Lo Spazzacamino, Les vêpres siciliennes, Simon Boccanegra, Un ballo in maschera, and La forza del destino.

The audiences will be able to immerse themselves in the world of Italian opera and learn more about the composer and his works by attending Scenic Introduction in the lobby on the 5th floor an hour before the relevant performance. The informative meetings will be held before La traviata on February 14, 2025, Rigoletto on February 15, 2025, Macbeth on February 20, 2025, Aida on March 5, 2025, and Verdi. Requiem on February 23, 2025.

It should be noted that the Mariinsky Theatre is famous for its wide and varied Verdi’s repertoire. Nowadays the unique repertoire of the Primorsky Stage includes five brilliant masterpieces by the composer.
