It’s Verdi time: The Primorsky Stage launches a thematic series of performances in honor of the Italian maestro

In February and March, as many as four significant works by the iconic Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi will be performed on the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. Guest soloists – Zinaida Tsarenko, Grand Prix winner at the XVII International Tchaikovsky Competition, and Maharram Huseynov, recipient of the Onegin National Opera Award – will participate in some of the performances.

On February 8, 2024, the audience will be carried over to hot Egypt while enjoying Aida by Giuseppe Verdi. Each of the protagonists will have to resolve the eternal conflict between feelings and duty. A whole storm of passions will unfold against the backdrop of Ancient Egypt whose luxury is lavishly shown in the production by Alexei Stepanyuk, complemented by spectacular video art.

On March 15, 2024, the audiences will enjoy a repertoire rarity, the monumental opera Don Carlo. The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will present the historical performance by Stage Director Yuri Alexandrov, with production design by Teimuraz Murvanidze. The magnificent production is framed with gloomy splendor: the massive scenery recreates the look and atmosphere of Escorial, the palace and monastery of Philip II, which is called the eighth wonder of the world. The central idea of the performance follows Verdi’s concept: in the state ruled by Philip II, there is no place for human feelings and freedom, and the King himself is tragically lonely. The performance of Don Carlo is a rare opportunity to discover the “mature” Verdi and to gain a deeper understanding of his musical genius.

On March 17, 2024, the operatic variety will be crowned by the performance of the Messa da Requiem. Composed in memory of Gioachino Rossini and Alessandro Manzoni, the Verdi’s masterpiece stands out among other liturgical works for its vivid theatricality. The composer concentrates on the main thing, the feelings of a person who has reached the fateful moment between life and death, expressing these feelings in an impeccable musical form.

Guest soloists from the Mariinsky Theatre, Zinaida Tsarenko (mezzo-soprano) and Maharram Huseynov (bass-baritone), will appear on March 15 and 17, 2024 to honor the events dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi. The brilliant singers will be partnered by soloists of the Opera Company of the Primorsky Stage. The Theatre’s Principal Conductor, Pavel Smelkov, will take the baton of the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage.
