Opera and ballet hits, phenomenal soloists and neoclassical ballet from China: February and March playbill of the Primorsky Stage

The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre presents the February and March playbill full of vivid events, big names and exquisite musical rarities.

Italian opera will be represented by stylish productions with a high degree of expression: Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini (February 10, 2024) and Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo (February 15, 2024). Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (February 4, 2024) and Le nozze di Figaro (February 29, 2024) will give the audience a charge of optimism and delicate irony.

The warmer weather will bring Verdi’s masterpieces to bloom in the opera playbill: La traviata (February 2, 2024), Aida (February 8, 2024), as well as Don Carlo (March 15, 2024) returning after a long break. Composed for six soloists of the highest caliber, this opera captivates the audience by combining political intrigue and love affair in a lengthy four-act drama. The performance will be adorned by new names on the world stage, the guest soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre such as the Grand Prix winner at the XVII International Tchaikovsky Competition Zinaida Tsarenko (mezzo-soprano) and the Onegin National Opera Award recipient Maharram Huseynov (bass-baritone). On March 17, 2024, the series of Verdi’s masterpieces will continue with a concert performance of the Requiem, a legendary composition by the Italian master which belongs to the genre of spiritual music.

On February 11 and 17, 2024, as well as on March 8 and 30, 2024, the audience will enjoy the recent premiere of the season, Sergei Prokofiev’s opera The Love for Three Oranges in a spectacular staging by Alexander Petrov. This allegorical fairy tale opera is attractive both for young and adult audiences due to the variety of its topics such as the search for love and difficult trials, combining subtle humor with grotesque theatricality.

To commemorate the 180th anniversary of the birth of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, a large-scale celebration of the prominent Russian composer is planned by the Mariinsky Theatre. The Primorsky Stage is richly stored with un-conventional productions of his works, each distinguished by its vivid stage embodiment. Thus, the playbill for the coming months will be adorned with The Tsar’s Bride (February 16, 2024, March 6, 2024), The Snow Maiden (March 2 and 28, 2024) and The Tale of Tsar Saltan (March 10, 2024). On February 18, 2024, the Theatre will celebrate another major anniversary in the art world, 225 years since the birth of Alexander Pushkin, with the “Winter Dreams” program. The grand concert will continue the series of anniversary events and become the central musical event of February.

The ballet playbill will surprise the audience with the variety of its repertoire titles, warming the hearts with the sunny and merry performances of Don Quixote by Ludwig Minkus (February 3, 2024, March 7, 2024) and Konyok-Gorbunok (The Little Humpbacked Horse) by Rodion Shchedrin (February 1, 2024, March 3 and 31, 2024). Ballet addicts will also be delighted by the all-time classics such as Swan Lake by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (February 7, 2024, March 14, 2024), Giselle by Adolphe Adam (February 9, 2024, March 29, 2024) and La Bayadère by Ludwig Minkus (March 9, 2024). The evenings of one-act ballets will also shimmer with a range of diverse feelings and emotions: Carmen Suite. The Firebird (March 1, 2024); Phaedra. Carmen Suite (March 16, 2024).

The long-awaited tour of the Liaoning Ballet Company of China will become one of the centerpieces of February. The largest ballet company in Asia will present its new original productions for the first time in Vladivostok. On February 20 and 21, 2024, the ballet Sundial will be performed, and on February 23, 24 and 25, 2024 – Notre-Dame de Paris.

Children’s operatic hits will be performed on the Chamber Stage of the Theatre. The cheerful characters from the Brothers Grim fairy tale will sing famous songs in Bremen Town Musicians to the music of Gennady Gladkov on February 3 and 24, 2024, and on March 16 and 31, 2024. A story that touches the hearts of listeners of every age will be told by the characters of The Little Prince by Leonid Klinichev on February 10 and 23, 2024, and on March 23, 2024. The favorite characters from The Turnip by Rustam Sagdiev (February 17, 2024, March 3, 2024) and Murych the Cat by Sergei Banevich (February 25, 2024, March 9 and 24, 2024) will tell the audience about true friendship and kind-heartedness.
