The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre Closes the Season with the Classical Ballet Pearl Raymonda

This weekend, on May 27 and May 28, 2023, the closing performances and concerts of the 2022/23 season will be held at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre, and Alexander Glazunov’s Raymonda with choreography revised by Eldar Aliev will be the final brilliant ballet.

Raymonda is one of the most colorful and spectacular performances of the ballet theatre, which has enjoyed unfailing success and love of the audience and performers for 125 years. For the choreographer Marius Petipa, it became his last big masterpiece and the apogee of aesthetics of the 19th century classical ballet.

Eldar Aliev, Ballet Artistic Director of the Primorsky Stage, turned his attention to this ballet to present the great master’s legacy in Vladivostok and breath new life into it.

“For its long scenic life, this ballet created on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre was revised just once. Konstantin Sergeyev presented his revised version in 1948. To stage a new version of Raymonda, one needs to take this very seriously, but I think the time has come. I hope that our new version will be greeted with applause,” Eldar Aliev notes.

In the premiere performances, the brilliant soloists – young dancers much loved by the audience – will appear on the stage. The virtuoso part of Raymonda will be performed by Lilia Berezhnova, Lada Sartakova and Ksenia Abdulkarimova. Each soloist will present her own image of the medieval fair lady and introduce her own intonations into the part. Denis Klepikov will appear as the gallant knight Jean de Brienne, and Yuri Zinnurov will perform the part of the passionate Saracen sheikh.

Guests of the Primorsky Stage will enjoy the sumptuous ballet in sets by the legendary designer of ballet and opera Simon Virsaladze awarded the Stalin Prize for this scenery in 1949. Ballet costumes, which amaze the audience with precious fabrics and plenty of small details, have been created from sketches by Vyacheslav Okunev, Honored Artist of Russia, at theatre shops in Saint Petersburg, Vladikavkaz and Vladivostok.

Alexander Glazunov’s Raymonda will be premiered at the Primorsky Stage on May 27 and May 28, 2023. The performances will be conducted by Vitaly Shevelev.

Moreover, the last weekend of the season the Chamber Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage will give the theatrical concert with sand animation “Le quattro stagioni by Vivaldi” on May 27, 2023. The Primorsky Stage will also twice present Rustam Sagdiev’s opera The Turnip on May 28, 2023 at 12:00 and 14.00. The opera is a premiere in the children’s repertoire of the 2022/23 season.
