Additions to the May Playbill: Grandiose Operas and a Mystic Ballet

More favorite performances await the audience at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in May. The playbill of the month has expanded due to the operas Rigoletto and The Queen of Spades and the romantic ballet Giselle.

On May 19, 2023, the Primorsky Stage will present the musical drama Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. This opera has everything that the audience loves including an exciting plot, sumptuous historical costumes and impressive personages. The composer’s greatest success is that he has created ambiguous characters and brilliantly reflected them in his music. The primary hero is the Duke’s hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto. In the course of the opera, the audience sights two extraordinarily contradictive persons in this personage: an acid scoundrel and a dolorous, infinitely loving father.

On May 20, 2023, the guests will be able to enjoy the fantastic ballet Giselle by Adolphe Adam. The peasant girl Giselle falls in love with Count Albrecht. She does not suspect that his noble rank would not allow them to join in marriage. Having known Albrecht’s secret, Giselle goes mad and dies to turn, in Act II, into a mysterious Wilis who may possibly shield her beloved from vengeance. One of the most beautiful romantic ballets, Giselle amazes the audience with its inimitable atmosphere and the beauty of classical dance.

On May 21, 2023, the mystic opera The Queen of Spades by Pyotr Tchaikovsky will be performed at the Primorsky Stage. In his time, Alexander Pushkin’s novel of the same name inspired Tchaikovsky to create the composition perfectly new in terms of tenor. His opera has transformed the funny anecdotal story of the consuming passion for gambling into the drama telling us about the struggle for such clear, lofty feeling as love. In the Primorsky Stage production, the mystical plot will unfold on the background of Petersburg’s landscapes or in magnificent palace interiors.

The repertoire of the second half of May includes family-friendly performances such as The Little Prince by Leonid Klinichev on May 20, 2023 and The Turnip by Rustam Sagdiev on May 28, 2023. The season will end with the vivid ballet premiere of Alexander Glazunov’s Raymonda on May 26, May 27 and May 28, 2023.
