On May 23, 2023 Rustam Sagdiev’s opera for children The Turnip recently premiered at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will be performed at the House of Officers of Ussuriysk Garrison.
The Turnip is the opera most recently included in the Primorsky Stage’s repertoire for children. It was premiered in the Chamber Hall of the Primorsky Stage in March 2023. The folk tale of unity and friendship was presented in the Primorsky Stage’s original scenery and design. The sets were designed by Pyotr Okunev, Chief Designer of the Primorsky Stage, and Yulia Ruleva acted as the Adaptation Director who succeeded in shifting the opera from Saint Petersburg to Vladivostok.
Both traditional operatic forms or genres and Russian forklore full of scenic or regional variety are recognizable in this opera, folk tunes and such folk instruments as the triangle, woodblock, spoons, rattle, and balalaika are hearable. In addition to the habitual characters of the tale, there are also new ones, such as singing trees and birds and the Jester, who acts as the storyteller. The original performance is aimed at acquainting the audience with the operatic theatre and the lavish Russian folklore.
On May 23, 2023 at 16:00 and 17:30 the primary parts will be performed by soloists of the Primorsky Stage Opera such as Laura Bustamante, Vladislav Chibirev, Svetlana Rozhok, Anastasia Gensler, Mingiyan Odzhaev, Alina Mikhailik, and Margarita Magay. The piano part will be performed by Marina Repina, who is responsible for musical preparation of the production.
It may be noted that the opera company’s touring is a part of the educational project “Mariinsky for Children”. The Primorsky Stage’s repertoire for children was first presented in cities of the Primorsky Region in March 2021. The audience in Ussuriysk and Partizansk might then enjoy the family-friendly opera Murych the Cat written by such classic of children’s music as Sergei Banevich.
