Spend Time Nice and Profitably: the Primorsky Stage Invites Schoolchildren for the Mariinsky Holidays

From March 24 to April 2, 2023, during the spring school holidays, the Primorsky Stage is going to hold events for young audiences of different ages. As part of the Mariinsky Holidays Project, children will be introduced to historical figures and literary characters coming to life in opera and ballet performances on the Primorsky Stage.

The series of events will open on March 24, 2023 with a performance of Modest Musorgsky’s historical opera Boris Godunov. Before the performance, young viewers will learn about the origins of acting and opera genres. Afterwards, they will have a chance to attend a master class held by a professional artist, to consolidate the acquired knowledge.

On March 25, 2023, The Sleeping Beauty, ballet-féerie by Pyotr Tchaikovsky will be performed. An hour before the start of the performance, the audience will be able to acquire some ballet skills by taking part in a dance lesson. Guests are required to bring a change of shoes and comfortable, non-hampering clothes.

On March 26, 2023, the spring holidays will continue with the large-scale opera Mazepa by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Before the start of the performance, schoolchildren can expect an unusual lecture on stage weapons and features of stage fencing.

On March 30, 2023, the Theatre playbill will feature Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin after the poetic novel of the same name by Alexander Pushkin. Before the start of the performance, the guests will discuss the 19th century ballroom culture, the secret language of fans and the hidden meaning of signs and gestures.

On March 31, 2023, the grandiose ballet La Bayadère by Ludwig Minkus will be performed. The audience will look into the theme of the East in ballet; they will learn about oriental costumes, with an opportunity to consider them in detail.

The practical course “Pushkin’s Poetry” will come as the final event of the spring school holidays. On April 2, 2023, before the performance of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tale of Tsar Saltan, children will have the chance to read their favorite excerpts from the Russian classic’s fairytale of the same name and receive a souvenir from the Theatre.

The number of participants in interactive events is limited. To participate, you should e-mail an application stating the date and name of the event, along with the child’s full name and age, to the address visit_pmt@mariinsky.ru no later than one day before the selected performance.

The playbill of the Primorsky Stage contains other events for family viewing during the spring school holidays. They include premiere performances of Rustam Sagdiev’s opera The Turnip (March 25, 26, April 1, 2023), a symphony concert from the Rachmaninoff – 150 cycle (April 1, 2023), and Sergei Banevich’s cheerful opera Murych the Cat (April 2, 2023).
