Semyon Kotko in the program of the Mariinsky Festival: love on the fragments of a peaceful life

On August 3, 2022, during the VII International Mariinsky Far East Festival, Vladivostok, the production of Sergei Prokofiev’s opera Semyon Kotko, a recipient of the Golden Mask prize, will be performed by renowned soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre such as Sergei Semishkur, Yevgeny Nikitin, Andrei Serov, Zhanna Dombrovskaya, Vadim Kravets, and Yekaterina Solovyova.

With his heartbreaking musical language, the composer describes the realities of the civil war. Semyon Kotko, which has been staged by the Director Yuri Alexandrov, People’s Artist of Russia, and the Set Designer Semyon Pastukh, is a fantastic spectacle amazing the audience with its large scope and bright colors. The former peaceful life is broken into fragments, and under them, there proves to be love, gone through hardships but yet alive and struggling. The soldier Semyon Kotko returns from the war, but instead of his home he sees an empty land, pitted by crows in which strangely wary people are hiding – these are his fellow villagers, his lifelong friends and his mother, aged and burdened with woes and grief.

At the Primorsky Stage, Vladivostok audience is expected to see pictures of the possible future and be horrified by the apocalyptic atmosphere or encouraged by love and exploit. Gleb Filshtinsky, a several-times recipient of Russia’s Golden Mask theatre prize, is the Lighting Designer of the production. Irina Soboleva, Honored Artist of Russia, is in charge of music preparation. Konstantin Rylov (Mariinsky Theatre) and Larisa Shveikovskaya (Primorsky Stage) are the Principal Chorus Masters. The Mariinsky Orchestra is to be under the baton of Valery Gergiev.
