Moscow tenor Nikolay Erokhin appears at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre

Tenor Nikolay Erokhin, a recipient of the Onegin Russian National Opera Award and a leading soloist of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre, will appear at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in March.

On March 20, 2022, the singer is to impersonate Herman in the Mariinsky Theatre’s well-known production of the classic Russian opera The Queen of Spades by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. He has already appeared at the Primorsky Stage and is by now ready to represent his interpretation of the tenor part of immense complexity. It is one of the best roles in his repertoire.

“I believe that Herman considered money to be just an expedient for his traverse of the social cleavage between him and Liza. Though she was high in the social scale, he thought they were kindred spirits similar in a kind of madness. […] My Herman is a passionate, impetuous romantic to whom love is everything. In the finale, driven to desperation by his frenzy for gambling, he forgets Liza to turn into quite a different man. Therein lies his madness, and therein lies his tragedy. […] I have travelled a long way to the image of Herman, and I would like the audience to forget that what I do is called singing. The voice must follow thoughts, words and actions so that the opera does not turn out a fancy-dress concert,” said the soloist.

The soloist’s companions on the stage will be Marat Mukhamedzyanov as Count Tomsky, Vyacheslav Vasilyev as Prince Yeletsky, Irina Kolodyazhnaya as the Countess, Liliya Kadnikova as Liza, and Tatiana Makarchuk as Polina. The opera is to be performed under the baton of Pavel Smelkov, Principal Conductor of the Primorsky Stage.

Nikolay Erokhin became a prizewinner at the International Glinka Vocal Competition in 2009, a recipient of the Moscow Literary & Music Award in 2017 and a recipient of the Onegin Russian National Opera Award for the part of Laca Klemeň in Leoš Janáček’s Jenůfa in 2018. Nikolay Erokhin has graduated from the Glinka Novosibirsk State Conservatory and the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory. From 1999 to 2001 he was as a soloist at the Novosibirsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre and collaborated with the Novosibirsk Philharmonic. Since 2011 he has served as a soloist at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre.

The soloist’s repertoire includes such famous roles as Pierre Bezukhov in War and Peace, Radamès in Aida, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Prince Andrey Khovansky in Khovanshchina, Don Jose in Carmen, and Othello in Verdi’s Othello. He takes an active part in the Irina Arkhipova Foundation’s projects such as “Vladislav Piavko & Company. Russian Tenors’ Parade”, “Opera – The New Generation” and others. The International Union of Music Professionals decorated him with a jubilee medal in 2009.
