On May 14, 2021 Giacomo Puccini’s final opera Turandot, a drama of violent passions based on Count Carlo Gozzi’s fairy-tale play of the same name, will be performed at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The title part will be sung by Natalia Muradymova, a guest soprano soloist from Moscow.
Turandot remained uncompleted because of the composer’s death in 1924 and became the top of Puccini’s oeuvre and a pinnacle of his creation. It made Turandot the most known Chinese princess in the music community. Having interwoven colors and traditions of classic Italian drama, the composer created his music fairy tale, assigning primary importance to colorful orchestral episodes, powerful choral scenes and vocal parts intended for outstanding voices.
Turandot was premiered at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre as lately as April 30, 2021 in its French version staged by Charles Roubaud.
Natalia Muradymova, a soloist with the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre, a prize-winner at the International Glinka Vocalists’ Competition (Russia) and the International Antonín Dvořák Singing Competition (Czech Republic) and a recipient of many Russian prizes including 2019 Golden Mask Award, will make her debut as Princess Turandot in the third premiere performance of the opera on May 14, 2021. The party of Calaf will be sung by Alexei Smirnov, Liù – Alina Mikhailik, Timur – Sergei Pleshivtsev. The baton will be held by Pavel Smelkov.
