War and Peace: Highlight on the Primorsky Stage This Spring

On March 20-22, 2020 Sergei Prokofiev’s War and Peace after the novel of the same name by Lev Tolstoy is to be performed on the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The principal parts will be played by leading Mariinsky soloists from Saint Petersburg.

The performance is staged by Kristina Larina who has already staged it at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre in 2016. “This performance was conceived as one for a concert hall so it lasts 3 hours instead of 5 ones. It is an easy human story to tell and – though it is called War and Peace – it is an inner human war”, – said Kristina Larina.

The sets are designed by Pyort Okunev, Chief Stage Designer of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre; the costumes are designed by Tatiana Noginova, Costume Designer for the 2000 performance staged by Andrei Konchalovsky. The parts are jointly prepared by soloists of the Primorsky Stage and the Mariinsky Theatre under the guidance of Irina Soboleva, Concert Mistress, Honoured Artist of Russia. The first performances will run under the baton of Pavel Smelkov, Principal Conductor of the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage.
