III International Mariinsky Far East Festival has Finished in Vladivostok

On August 8, 2018 III International Mariinsky Far East Festival, Vladivostok, finished. The Festival was held on the performance venues of the Primorsky Stage from July 24, 2018. The final performance of the festival was The Queen of Spades opera by Pyotr Tchaikovsky staged by Yuri Temirkanov (August 8, 2018). The main parts were performed by: Nazhmiddin Mavlyanov (Herman), Elena Stikhina (Liza), Larisa Dyadkova (Countess), Yulia Matochkina (Polina), Aleksey Markov (Prince Yeletsky), Roman Burdenko (Count Tomsky). Pavel Smelkov was the conductor.

Results of the III International Mariinsky Far East Festival, Vladivostok

  • 26 events took place on 6 performance venues of Vladivostok and Ussuriysk;
  • Participants from 6 countries took part in the Festival: Germany, South Korea, China, Russia, USA and Japan;
  • Top soloists of the Mariinsky Ballet and Mariinsky Opera took part in the Festival;
  • Outstanding conductors and eminent instrumentalists took part in the Festival;
  • New names have been discovered: scholarship holders of the Atkins Young Artists Program, soloists of the Academy of Young Opera Singers of the Mariinsky Theatre, and prizewinner at the International Grand Piano Competition Alexandra Dovgan;
  • Seven Far Eastern premieres took place: Don Quichotte opera by Jules Massenet staged by Yannis Kokkos, Tristan und Isolde opera by Richard Wagner directed by Dmitry Chernyakov, Così fan tutte, ossia La scuola degli amanti opera buffa by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Salome opera by Richard Strauss (concert version); Don Quixote ballet by Ludwig Minkus staged by Alexander Gorsky based on the original choreography by Marius Petipa, The Four Seasons ballet staged by Ilia Jivoy to the music of Max Richter (based on Antonio Vivaldi), Cinderella ballet composed by Sergei Prokofiev, choreographed by Aleksey Ratmansky;
  • A new educational project of the Primorsky Stage, Scenic Introduction, was held. On July 24, 2018 the Festival opened with a Far Eastern premiere, a show of Don Quixote ballet by Ludwig Minkus staged by Alexander Gorsky based on the original choreography by Marius Petipa. The main parts were performed by the stars of the Mariinsky Ballet. The Festival was continued by the premiere of The Four Seasons ballet by Ilia Jivoy, before which a new enlightening project of the Primorsky Stage, Scenic Introduction, was presented. The ballet program of the Festival was finished with Cinderella ballet composed by Sergei Prokofiev, choreographed by Aleksey Ratmansky. Ekaterina Kondaurova, Nadezhda Batoeva, Kristina Shapran, Renata Shakirova, Timur Askerov, Kimin Kim, Vladimir Shklyarov, Konstantin Zverev took part in the performances of the Festival.

The concert program of the III International Mariinsky Far East Festival, Vladivostok, was opened by Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici (Germany) and the Mariinsky Chamber Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage. The audience enjoyed the performance of violinists Miura Fumiaki (Japan) and Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici, the Mariinsky Orchestra under the direction of Shizuo Z Kuwahara (Japan), and concerts with the participation of young pianist Alexandra Dovgan. The symphonic program of the Festival was completed by the Mozart monographic concert: a pianist from South Korea Yeol Eum Son soloed in the Piano Concerto No. 20, the Requiem was performed by the scholarship holders of the Atkins Young Artists Program, soloist of the Academy of Young Opera Singers of the Mariinsky Theatre Evelina Agabalaeva and the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage under the baton of Pavel Smelkov.

The brightest event of the Festival was the premiere of the Tristan und Isolde opera by Richard Wagner conducted by Valery Gergiev (directed by Dmitry Chernyakov). Also Valery Gergiev conducted the concert performances of Iolanta opera by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Salome opera by Richard Strauss. Leading soloists of the Mariinsky Opera and invited performers have sung the main parts at the Festival: Elena Stikhina, Irina Churilova, Yulia Matochkina, Mikhail Vekua, Nazhmiddin Mavlyanov, Roman Burdenko, Aleksey Markov, Evgeny Nikitin, Yuri Vorobiev, Mikhail Petrenko. Before their performances at the Primorsky Stage, Valery Gergiev, the Mariinsky Orchestra and soloists of the Mariinsky Opera toured to Guangzhou (China), where War and Peace opera by Sergei Prokofiev staged by Andrei Konchalovsky was presented.

Far Eastern premiere of Don Quichotte opera staged by Yannis Kokkos also took place at the Festival. Primorsky Stage also saw the 1st act of the concert performance of Così fan tutte, ossia La scuola degli amanti opera buffa by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart featuring the scholarship holders of the Atkins Young Artists Program. Among the Primorsky Stage performances presented at the Festival by the top soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre, there’s Carmen opera by Georges Bizet staged by Daria Panteleeva and The Queen of Spades opera by Pyotr Tchaikovsky staged by Yuri Temirkanov.

The season at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will continue with the tour of the National Ballet of China and the vivid performances of its own repertoire: Die Zauberflöte opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Rigoletto opera by Giuseppe Verdi, Tosca opera by Giacomo Puccini, The Tale of Tsar Saltan opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Giselle, ou les Wilis, a romantic ballet by Adolphe Adan, L’Oiseau de feu ballet by Igor Stravinsky, Swan Lake ballet composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and many others. As early as on September 11, 2018 the audience of the Primorsky Stage will enjoy premiere of The Tsar's Bride opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov staged by Vyacheslav Starodubtsev.

Let us remind you that the ballet troupe of the Primorsky Stage is now successfully touring in Saint Petersburg on the historical stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The final performance of the tour, which will also finish the 2017/18 season of the Saint Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre, will be The Sleeping Beauty féerie ballet by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (August 12, 2018).
