Closing of the Mariinsky Festival — Carmina Burana by Carl Orff

The monumental composition Carmina Burana for chorus and orchestra by Carl Orff will be presented for the first time at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre at the Closing of the II International Mariinsky Far East Festival.

On 13 August, the legendary cantata will be performed by the Mariinsky Theatre soloists Anastasia Kalagina, Stanislav Leontiev, Vladislav Moroz, the Chorus and the Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage conducted by Justus Frantz, an internationally renowned German pianist and conductor, the founder and director of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival.

Carmina Burana is the most famous composition by Carl Orff, which brought him international recognition. The grandiose scenic cantata was written after the medieval texts found in one of Bavarian monasteries. It was among a few musical masterpieces of the 20th century that were immediately included into the treasury of popular classical repertoire, while O, Fortuna has become one of the most quoted choral pieces in the world of art.

A day earlier, August 12 will see the final performance of the Festival ballet programme — Giselle by Adolphe Adam, starring soloists of the Liaoning Ballet (China), winners of Grand-Prix at the Vienna International Dance Competition, invited artists of ballet companies from Canada, South Africa, China Yu Chuanya (Giselle) and Zhang Haidong (Count Albrecht).
