The Primorsky Stage Presents Don Giovanni Premiere to Celebrate Mozart’s Anniversary

On December 8 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Don Giovanni (concert performance) is to make its premiere at the Great Hall of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. Its plot was inspired by a well-known legend about a nobleman who had become notorious for its amorous victories. Don Giovanni’s story, brilliantly embodied in music by the Austrian composer, has become one of the most popular themes on the operatic stage.

“It reflects all facets of life: from lyricism and humour to tragedy and fantasy. Passions that are burning there are absolutely living and understandable for any listener. That is why Don Giovanni is always modern and relevant. It made an impression in the 18th century, became the first Mozart’s operatic triumph in the 19th century and contemporary multiple productions have only proved its timelessness,” – commented the Primorsky Stage conductor Pavel Smelkov.

The lead roles will be performed by: the one of the world’s most sought-after coloratura sopranos, the guest soloist of the Metropolitan Opera and the Royal Opera House (Covent-Garden) Albina Shagimuratova (as Donna Anna), the special prize winner of the XXIV International Operalia Competition Elena Stikhina (as Donna Elvira), the Mariinsky Theatre soloist and laureate of international competitions Vadim Kravets (as Don Giovanni). The Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage will be conducted by Pavel Smelkov.
