In November the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre Presents the Premiere of Opera Christmas Eve

On November 25 and 26 Nikolay Rimsky Korsakov’s opera Christmas Eve will premiere in the Chamber Hall of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. A fantastic féerie based on the plot of Nikolai Gogol’s story of the same title has retained principle storylines and kind humour of the original novel. The composer introduced new characters which enhanced the fairytale motif of the performance. The opera features some cheerful public scenes, ritual songs, poetic images of the distant past.

The transfer of the performance from the historical to the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will be led by conductor Pavel Petrenko. Pavel Petrenko graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory and has been working with the Mariinsky Theatre since 2003. He has conducted such operatic premieres as Dead Souls and the Lefthander by Rodion Shchedrin, Mermaid by Alexander Dargomyzhsky, L'elisir d'amore by Gaetano Donizetti, Salambo and the Marriage by Modest Mussorgsky, Mavra by Igor Stravinsky, as well as performances Love for Three Oranges by Sergei Prokofiev, Don Quixote by Jules Massenet, Benvenuto Cellini by Hector Berlioz, The Little Humpbacked Horse and A Christmas Tale by Rodion Shchedrin.
