Ryo Shibata


Drums

Ryo Shibata was born in Osaka. He had love for music from childhood, studying percussion playing with the famous drummer and instructor Fumio Emori from the age of 10. Having finished high school, he entered the Koyo Professional College of Music in the city of Kobe.

In 2003 he won the grant and entered the Berklee College of Music in Boston. As college student, he studied with jazz drummer, composer, and singer Terri Lyne Carrington. Even before graduation, Ryo Shibata as a member of a student music band performed in the state of Oregon and in Monterey, California, and took part in the jazz festival JVC Jazz Festival held in New York City.

In 2008, the drummer continued his musical career this time in Tokyo, while still appearing at various jazz festivals abroad.

In 2010, with musicians Takuya Kuroda (trumpet) and Hiroshi Miyagawa (piano) he started a band called Megapteras. In 2017, the band released their debut album Full Throttle.
