Pierre Hartmann was born in Dole (Franche-Comté, France). After learning the guitar and the lute, at the age of 18 he went on to study double bass at the National Conservatory of the Amiens Region (Conservatoire National de Region Amiens). Later he graduated from the Conservatory of the 1st District of Paris (Conservatoire Municipal W.A. Mozart 1e arrondissement de Paris). Pierre worked at the Opéra National de Paris, while playing baroque, classical and contemporary music as a member of different ensembles and orchestras. In 2002–2016 he taught at the Besançon Conservatoire and played with L'Orchestre Victor Hugo Franche-Comté. Pierre also participated in recording of a monographic CD by the contemporary French composer Michelle Meno at Naxos Records (2001). Since September 2016 Pierre Hartmann has been a member of the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage.
