From 1986 to 1989 Maxim Semyonov studied at the Glinka Choral College in Leningrad. From 1989 to 1997 he was taught at the Secondary Special Music School of the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory (class of Professor V.M. Bujanovsky, People’s Artist of the RSFSR, then class of G.R. Avik). From 1997 to 2002 he was educated at the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory (class of Professor A.E. Glukhov, People’s Artist of Russia).
From 1999 to 2001 Maxim Semyonov was a member of the horn section at the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Yu.Kh. Temirkanov, People’s Artist of the USSR.
Over the years, he has served as a member or a leader of the horn section at many orchestras such as the St Petersburg Chamber Opera Orchestra (2004–2006, alongside his job there as the Orchestra Director from 2005 to 2006), the Symphony Orchestra of the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory (2007–2009, 2014–2015), the Ulsan Symphony Orchestra (Republic of Korea, 2009–2011), the Tatarstan National Symphony Orchestra (Kazan, 2013–2014).
From 2012 to 2013 Maxim Semyonov was an orchestra member and assistant soloist to horns I-IV at the St Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra.
From 2015 to 2019 he was Horn Teacher at the Department of Orchestral Instruments of the Harbin Conservatory of Music (Harbin, Heilongjiang, China), Postgraduate.
Since 2018 Maxim Semyonov has been Solo Horn, Principal Horn and the leader of the horn section of the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage.
From 2019 to 2020 he served as a teacher at the Far Eastern State Institute of Arts. Since 2019 he has been a teacher at the Primorsky Branch of the Central Musical College – Academy of Music Performance, Vladivostok.
