Ivan Nikiforchin was born in Moscow. He graduated from the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory and completed his postgraduate studies there, training under Professor Valery Polyansky (Opera & Symphony Conducting) and Prof. Yury Abdokov (Composition, Orchestration, and History of Orchestral Styles).
From 2015 to 2024, he was employed with the State Symphony Capella of Russia. In March 2021, he made his debut as an opera conductor at the Bolshoi Theatre (conducting Mozart’s Don Giovanni). Since 2024, he has served as the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Moscow State Academic Symphony Orchestra.
Ivan Nikiforchin is the founder, artistic director, and chief conductor of the Academy of Russian Music, which comprises a chamber orchestra and a choir. With this ensemble, he has conducted Russian premieres of orchestral scores by Respighi, Hindemith, Lutosławski, Finzi, and others. His repertoire focuses on orchestral works by 20th- and 21st-century Russian composers, such as Myaskovsky, Shostakovich, B. Tchaikovsky, Peiko, Galynin, Weinberg, Bunin, Popov, Ustvolskaya, and Abdokov. Also, it includes virtually all of Rudolf Barshai’s transcriptions.
Ivan Nikiforchin works closely together with Terra Musica (Russia-Germany-Italy), Yury Abdokov’s International Creative Workshop, and also with the Boris Tchaikovsky Society; under their aegis, he issued the world-premiere recordings of the complete chamber orchestra scores and works for strings by Herman Galynin, as well as the complete original choral works by Lyadov (both CDs were released on the British label Toccata-Classics). In 2021, he presented the world premiere of Weinberg’s Suite for small orchestra, Op. 26 (released on CD). For the first time since the premieres conducted by Barshai in the 1960s, he has performed numerous scores by Peiko, Bunin, Weinberg, Lokshin, Volkonsky, and other composers.
He performs with the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, the Evgeny Svetlanov State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia, the Russian National Orchestra, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, the Russian National Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, and many ensembles from the largest philharmonic centers in Russia.
Ivan Nikiforchin was the music director and conductor of the production of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre (2022), and of The Snow Maiden opera drama (based on the spring tale by Ostrovsky to music by Tchaikovsky) at the Bolshoi Theatre (co-production with the Maly Theatre of Russia, 2024).
Since 2022, he has been teaching opera & symphony conducting at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory.
Ivan Nikiforchin is a prize-winner at the I Rachmaninoff International Competition of Pianists, Composers, and Conductors (2nd award and Silver Medal, 2022). He was honored with the Boris Tchaikovsky International Award (2019) and the Grand Prix at the International Magnus Opus Festival of Contemporary Music (2021). His recordings of music by Galynin and Lyadov (2021) brought him two Pure Sound International Awards.
He is a winner of the Presidential Prize for young cultural figures (2024), the Prize of the co-chairman of the Union of Theatre Performers of Russia (2024, for significant contribution to the development of musical theatre), the Art Theatre Award (2025, “Opera” nomination for the production of The Snow Maiden at the Bolshoi Theatre), and the International Professional Music BraVo Award (2025, Conductor of the Year).
