The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre is ending its season in Vladivostok with an impressive premiere of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Il trovatore, after which it will go on a wide-scale tour.
On May 23 and 25, 2025, the Vladivostok audience will for the first time enjoy a stage version of Giuseppe Verdi’s Il trovatore directed by Vyacheslav Starodubtsev and designed by Pyotr Okunev. The plot of the opera borrowed from the play of the same name by the Spanish dramatist Antonio García Gutiérrez is based on real events that took place in the history of Spain in the 15th century. A dark romantic drama will unfold on stage; two brothers unaware of their blood ties, become bitter rivals in the struggle for power and love. The authors of the production will present a “classic interpretation of musical images in accordance with Verdi’s ideas”, against the background of a spectacular and expressive set design. The main parts will be performed by the Primorsky Stage opera soloists. The Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage will be conducted by the Principal Conductor of the Theatre Pavel Smelkov.
From May 28 to June 8, 2025, the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will perform on tour in Krasnoyarsk for the first time. The Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre will become a host stage for the outstanding and original productions of the Vladivostok team.
On May 28, 29 and 30, 2025, the tour program will open with performances of Rodion Shchedrin’s ballet Konyok-Gorbunok (The Little Humpbacked Horse). On May 31 and June 1, 2025, the audiences will enjoy the company’s own original productions The Firebird and Phaedra performed in one evening. In Russia, both performances are available only in the repertoire of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre.
The series of performances in Krasnoyarsk will be continued by the opera company. On June 3 and 4, 2025, the tour program will feature the premiere of the past season, a masterpiece of the bel canto era, Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Don Pasquale. On June 5 and 6, 2025, Ruggero Leoncavallo’s drama Pagliacci will be performed. The pearl of Italian verismo will be presented in the original production staged and designed by Marat Gatsalov, recipient of the Golden Mask theatre prize. On June 7, 2025, the company will perform Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s most luminous work, Iolanta. This philosophical fairy tale of the awakening of love and inner light will be presented in the production staged by Anna Shishkina and designed by Pyotr Okunev, a nominee for the 2025 Golden Mask theatre prize for the best Set and Costume Designer’s work.
On June 8, 2025, the tour will be crowned with a grand gala concert of the opera soloists accompanied by the Chorus of the Primorsky Stage and the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage, also marking the end of the season for the company. The Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage will be conducted by the Theatre’s Principal Conductor Pavel Smelkov.
The performances will be held as part of the “Great Tour” project, organized by the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Culture ROSCONCERT in accordance with the All-Russian Tour and Concert Plan of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
On June 4 and 5, 2025, the Primorsky Stage ballet company will end the season with its first-ever performances in Minsk. The National Academic Grand Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus will host performances of the ballet A Thousand and One Nights to music by Fikret Amirov. The performances will feature the Mariinsky Chorus and the Mariinsky Orchestra conducted by Ayyub Guliyev.
The original production of the ballet A Thousand and One Nights choreographed by the Ballet Artistic Director of the Primorsky Stage, People’s Artist of Russia Eldar Aliev, was included in the top 100 performances of the Golden Pool of the Russian Theatrical Productions this season and became the most toured performance of the ballet company.
In Minsk, the performances will be held at the main music venue of Belarus as part of the Ballet Summer Festival.
