IX International Mariinsky Far East Festival to be Held in Vladivostok in October and November

From October 29 to November 3, 2024, the opera program of the IX International Mariinsky Far East Festival will be presented in Vladivostok with the participation of the leading soloists of the Mariinsky Opera Company and the Mariinsky Orchestra under the conduction of Valery Gergiev. The opera program of the annual Festival includes four titles. Those will include performances of the Mariinsky Theatre that have never been presented in Vladivostok before, and the Primorsky Stage productions.

On October 29, 2024, the Festival will open with the opera The Enchanted Wanderer by the outstanding modern composer Rodion Shchedrin. Composed in 2002 and based on the novel of the same name by Nikolai Leskov, this opera-parable immediately received international recognition. Last year, the masterpiece was staged in Vladivostok. The laconic and stylish performance directed by Alexei Stepanyuk will be presented by opera soloists and the Chorus of the Primorsky Stage. Valery Gergiev will be conducting the Combined Mariinsky Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage.

On October 30, 2024, Giacomo Puccini’s opera Tosca will be performed in the Great Hall of the Theatre. The performance will tell the tragic love story of the artist Mario Cavardossi and the singer Floria Tosca, unfolding against the lush backdrop of the eternal Rome. The Primorsky version of Tosca is designed in the Empire style. At the Festival, the opera will be performed by soloists of the Mariinsky Opera Company and the Mariinsky Orchestra, together with the Chorus of the Primorsky Stage under the conduction of maestro Valery Gergiev.

On October 31, 2024, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Nabucco, a recent premiere of the Mariinsky Theatre, will be presented at the Primorsky Stage for the first time. The story about the cruel King of Babylon Nebuchadnezzar, who has chosen the path of truth and gone through triumph, betrayal and insanity, once captivated the thirty-year-old Verdi and helped him out of a life crisis. The Italian operatic masterpiece will be performed by soloists of the Mariinsky Opera Company and the Mariinsky Orchestra, together with the Chorus of the Primorsky Stage. Valery Gergiev will be at the conductor’s console.

On November 2 and 3, 2024 (at 13:00 and 19:00) Gioachino Rossini’s opera La Cenerentola will be presented in Vladivostok for the first time. The composer, together with the librettist Jacopo Ferretti have significantly revised the plot of Charles Perrault’s famous fairy tale and transferred the action to their own epoch, offering the audiences good humor and a fascinating richness of the music. This spring, the opera was staged at the Mariinsky Theatre by Director Ekaterina Malaya. Residents and guests of Vladivostok will enjoy the opera performed by soloists of the Mariinsky Opera Company, the Chamber Chorus of the Mariinsky Theatre and the Mariinsky Orchestra under the direction of the Principal Conductor of the Primorsky Stage Pavel Smelkov.
