Quite a Busy Opera Season: August and September Events on the Primorsky Stage

The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre presents a multifold opera program where every guest will be able to find a piece to his or her liking.

Mid-August will be marked by the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. On August 23, 2024, the Primorsky Stage will feature Don Carlo, an opera outstanding in every sense of the word. It is a monumental historical performance that amazes with the scale of its scenery and the abundance of beautiful arias. On August 24, 2024, the opera La traviata will be performed, a famous psychological love drama that exposes social prejudices.

Colorful and dynamic performances will help to prolong the summer sentiment. On August 30, 2024, Die Fledermaus will be performed, a fiery operetta by Johann Strauss II that crushes sorrows and eternal problems of family life. On September 1, 2024, the Theatre will present Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen, a globally renowned masterpiece full of numerous musical “hits”: from the brilliant overture and Habanera to torrid Seguidilla and effective Toreador’s Song.

The onset of the school year will be marked by operas for the whole family. On September 5, 2024, the beautiful fairy-tale opera Die Zauberflöte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will be performed. On September 7, 2024, the opera stage will host a musical “encyclopedia of Russian life”, the grand opera Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The Chamber Hall of the Theatre will also offer several performances for the youngest audiences: Murych the Cat by Sergei Banevich (August 17, 2024, September 7, 2024), The Little Prince by Leonid Klinichev (August 25, 2024), and Town Musicians of Bremen by Gennady Gladkov (August 31, 2024).

The “opera marathon” will culminate with the first premiere of the season, the opera Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti. The audience will enjoy an authentic Italian performance in the spirit of commedia dell'arte, decorated with picturesque scenery and exquisite costumes. The opera is a story of the misadventures of a wealthy aristocrat who has decided to marry a young bride. This witty opus about the vicissitudes of love is appreciated by critics for its unquenchable energy and careful distribution of musical accents; the general public values the opera for its exciting adventurous plot. The premiere performances will take place on September 14 and 15, 2024.
