The December playbill of the Primorsky Stage to feature The Nutcracker’s anniversary, “New Year’s Lights” concerts and an encounter with Grandfather Frost and Snegurochka

On the threshold of the main winter holiday, the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre presents large-scale colorful performances that are going to support the New Year’s festive atmosphere and give the audiences a boost of good mood.

At the beginning of the month, the Theatre’s playbill will feature classical ballet masterpieces. Ludwig Minkus’s Don Quixote (December 1, 2024) promises a true boost of sunny mood; the exclusive performances of Le Corsaire by Adolphe Adam (December 4, 2024) and Raymonda by Alexander Glazunov (December 6 and 8, 2024) by the Ballet Company of the Primorsky Stage will come as a firework of romantic exploits.

Another significant event will be the updated version of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake, which will be presented to the audience in a new stage design on December 19 and 20, 2024. In addition, the production of the main winter ballet of the Primorsky Stage, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, will be celebrating its 10th anniversary. The performances will take place from December 14 to 31, 2024 and will traditionally be accompanied by the advent of Grandfather Frost and Snegurochka. Another bright spot for ballet lovers will be the night dedicated to one-act ballets Carmen Suite by Bizet – Shchedrin, and Phaedra choreographed by Flemming Flindt.

At the end of the year, the Great Hall of the Theatre will host famous Russian operas: Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (December 5, 2024) dedicated to the 225th anniversary of Alexander Pushkin, The Snow Maiden by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (December 11, 2024) dedicated to the 180th anniversary of the composer, and the serenest opera by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Iolanta (December 13, 2024). Among the cheerful holiday performances of the month there will be the operetta Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss II (December 7, 2024 at 14:00 and 19:00) and the bel canto masterpiece Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti (December 21 and 24, 2024).

Perhaps, the warmest and most heartfelt New Year’s concerts will traditionally be held in the Chamber Hall of the Primorsky Stage. Starting from December 27, 2024, soloists of the opera and the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage will be waiting for guests at the theatrical evening concert “New Year’s Lights”, where they will perform popular classical and pop-music repertoire. During the daytime, one-act operas for family viewing will be performed, such as The Little Prince by Leonid Klinichev (December 14, 15, 21 and 27, 2024), The Turnip by Rustam Sagdiev (December 8, 28 and 29, 2024), Murych the Cat by Sergei Banevich (December 30, 2024), as well as Town Musicians of Bremen to the music by Gennady Gladkov (December 1, 20, 22 and 31, 2024).

It has grown into a good tradition that the Theatre team gives a series of pre-New Year performances in Primorsky Region. On December 18, 2024, opera soloists and the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage conducted by Pavel Smelkov will perform for teachers and students at the Far Eastern Federal University. On December 21, 2024, they will perform the opera for the whole family, The Little Prince by Leonid Klinichev, and give New Year Gala “I Can Recall That Magic Moment” at the House of Officers of Ussuriysk Garrison.
