Rimsky-Korsakov – 180: Special Events to Take Place on the Primorsky Stage in Honor of the Grand Composer-Storyteller

In October, the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will continue to honor the revered Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

On October 13, 2024, The Tale of Tsar Saltan, the most cheerful of the composer’s operas, will be performed. Based on the fairytale by Alexander Pushkin, it was composed to coincide with the centenary of the poet’s birth, and is as close as possible to the original Pushkin’s text. This year, the production of the Primorsky Stage also celebrates a special anniversary, as the opera premiered exactly 10 years ago (on October 11, 2014). Today, the audiences enjoy an updated version of the production directed by Ekaterina Malaya, supplemented with video projections and even more colorful stage sets and costumes.

On October 26, 2024, the Primorsky Stage will for the first time host the performance of the Central Concert Exemplary Orchestra of the Navy named after N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov. The Orchestra is one of the best creative ensembles of the Russian Armed Forces, and it has earned authority and recognition not only in Russia, but also abroad. The figure of Rimsky-Korsakov is of particular importance for the Orchestra, since the composer’s life and work were inextricably linked with the sea and the navy service. It is no coincidence that in 1994 the Orchestra was named after him. In Vladivostok, the ensemble will perform works by Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as masterpieces by other composers, namely Mikhail Glinka, Richard Wagner, Natalia Tchaikovskaya, Boris Diev, and Boris Anisimov. The soloists of the night will be multi-saxophonist Ivan Dyma and oboist Vladimir Vyatkin. Valentin Lyashchenko will be conducting.

The playbill of December 11, 2024 will feature The Snow Maiden opera. This fairytale and at the same time philosophical opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov has been holding the stage of Russian theatres for over one hundred and forty years, having passed through hundreds of adaptations. The audience of the Primorsky Stage will enjoy one of the most beautiful Russian operas in the stylish design by Georgy Tsypin, a set designer whose works are in demand all over the world. On the New Year’s eve, the famous “spring fairy tale” will melt the heart of every viewer.
