On July 28, 2023, the opera playbill of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will open with Boris Godunov. Over the course of one month, the audience will be given an encounter with an impressive series of performances of outstanding opera titles.
Traditionally, a considerable portion of the repertoire will be occupied by the Russian opera classics. Under the direction of Pavel Smelkov, Principal Conductor of the Primorsky Stage, performances of Boris Godunov (July 28, 2023), The Tsar’s Bride (July 30, 2023), and The Enchanted Wanderer (August 16, 2023) will be held. As part of the "Rachmaninoff – 150" cycle, a new stage version of the one-act opera Aleko (August 5, 2023) will be premiered.
The fairy tale operas The Tale of Tsar Saltan (August 6, 2023) and The Snow Maiden (August 25, 2023) by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov will be presented in stage productions with rich visual design. A rarity in the repertoire, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera Mazepa (August 27, 2023), will be enjoyed by the audience in a large-scale historical performance staged by Ilya Shlepyanov, which has already become a classic of the grand style.
The summer playbill also includes several extremely popular Italian operas. Such operatic hits as La traviata (August 4, 2023) and Tosca (August 10, 2023) will feature a guest opera singer, the famous tenor, soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre Sergei Skorokhodov. On August 12, 2023, a debut in the main female part is expected in Rigoletto. For the first time, the part of Gilda will be performed by the young soloist of the opera company Alisa Fedorenko. The action-packed opera-drama Pagliacci will be presented on July 29, 2023 in a modern interpretation by the renowned Stage Director, the Golden Mask award recipient Marat Gatsalov.
The audience will also enjoy several comic masterpieces by Austrian composers in luxurious costume design created by theatre craftsmen from St Petersburg. On August 11 and 13, 2023, Le nozze di Figaro opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will be performed; on August 18 and 20, 2023 – Die Fledermaus operetta by Johann Strauss II. The performances are in Russian, which makes them attractive for the Theatre newcomers and for family viewing.
