The Playbill of the Primorsky Stage to Include the Premiere Performance of Prince Igor, Songs of the War Years, Exclusive Ballets and Family Events during the May Holidays

The long-awaited May holidays are approaching. The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre can make them truly unforgettable. A special concert program is in store for the audience, along with large-scale opera and exquisite ballet performances.

The centerpiece of the playbill is the premiere performance of Alexander Borodin’s epic opera Prince Igor in a concert performance. This monumental classical masterpiece will be performed by the Opera Company soloists, the Chorus and the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage conducted by Anton Torbeev on the Victory Day, May 9, 2023.

Earlier, on May 6 and 7, 2023, songs of the war years will be performed in the Chamber Hall of the Theatre. The Songs of the Victory Concert carries on the tradition of annual chamber performances by soloists of the Opera Company on the eve of the main May holiday.

The May playbill will start with the sunniest and most Spanish ballet of the Russian stage, Don Quixote by Ludwig Minkus. The ballet will be performed on May 1, 2023 in the Great Hall of the Theatre. On May 4, 2023, the festive poster will be continued by an unfading classic, The Sleeping Beauty ballet-féerie, carrying the audience off into the magical world of Charles Perrault’s fairy tales and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s music. On May 6, 2023, the audience will be treated to the bright modern productions that can be enjoyed exclusively in Vladivostok; these are Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird and one of the last ballet premieres – Philip Glass’s Phaedra.

On May 5, 2023, the legendary opera drama Turandot by Giacomo Puccini will be performed. The libretto is based on the Chinese fairy tale by Carlo Gozzi about a cruel princess who destroys her courters after they fail to give the correct answers to her riddles. The title role will be performed by the rising star of the opera, First Prize winner at the Hibla Gerzmava Opera Singers and Accompanists Competition Olga Maslova. On May 7, 2023, the festive days will be decorated with a cheerful musical classic, Le nozze di Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. On May 6, 2023, the audience can enjoy Rustam Sagdiev’s opera The Turnip, which is suitable even for the very youngest.

May holidays also present a great chance to learn something new. The most inquisitive guests will be able to take theater tours and get acquainted with the history of the Theatre, examine the props and costumes, and get behind the scenes. Tours will be held on May 1, 6, 7, 8 and 9, 2023; the tickets are available at the box offices or on the official website of the Primorsky Stage.
