The December repertoire to include premiere of The Snow Maiden opera, a special performance of The Enchanted Wanderer opera, the closure of the Scriabin – 150 cycle, and not only

The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre is ready to present a lavish pre-New Year’s playbill containing new opera titles, symphony and chamber programs, children’s performances and, of course, performances of the most beloved New Year’s ballet, The Nutcracker.

OPERA
On December 23 and 26, 2022, the premiere performance of The Snow Maiden by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov will be held, staged by Alexander Galibin and designed by Georgy Tsypin.

The Snow Maiden is a classical piece of the Russian opera repertoire. Since its premiere in 1882 at the Mariinsky Theatre, the Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterpiece has been performed all over Russia.

The poetic plot of the opera is based on the fairy tale of the same name by Alexander Ostrovsky. It tells about the Snow Maiden, the daughter of Spring and Frost, who enters the human world and falls in love for the first time in her life.

On December 16, 2022, in honor of the 90th anniversary of the living Russian classic, composer Rodion Shchedrin, his opera The Enchanted Wanderer will be performed on the Primorsky Stage for the first time, staged by Alexei Stepanyuk. This stage version of the opera has won the Golden Mask award.

The composer’s works were performed on the Primorsky Stage as part of the program of the International Mariinsky Festival in 2017. Back then, the Piano Concerto No.1 was performed by the prizewinner at international competitions Kanon Matsuda (Japan), and the concert version of The Enchanted Wanderer opera was presented by the soloists, the chorus and the Mariinsky Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev.

In addition, in December, the audience will enjoy the acknowledged world classics performed by the soloists of the Primorsky Stage: operas Eugene Onegin (December 2, 2022) and Mazepa (December 9, 2022) by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, The Tale of Tsar Saltan by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (December 4, 2022), Carmen by Georges Bizet (December 11, 2022), as well as Die Fledermaus operetta, a masterpiece by “The Waltz King”, Johann Strauss II (December 28, 2022).

The Chamber Hall of the Primorsky Stage is waiting for the young audiences who will encounter their favorite characters from the children’s operas Murych the Cat (December 3, 17 and 27, 2022) and The Little Prince (December 10 and 25, 2022).

BALLET
In December, the Primorsky Stage will traditionally host The Nutcracker by Pyotr Tchaikovsky staged by the Ballet Artistic Director Eldar Aliev (December 15, 24-25, 27, 29-31, 2022).

In the first half of the month, the playbill will offer exuberant Le Corsaire (December 1, 2022), A Thousand and One Nights (December 3, 2022), The Sleeping Beauty (December 10, 2022), romantic Giselle (December 8, 2022) and Swan Lake (December 17, 2022).

CONCERTS
At the year’s end, the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage is going to complete the extensive Scriabin – 150 cycle. On December 18, 2022, the audience will enjoy the composer’s large-scale works: Symphony No. 3 and Le Poème de l’extase (The Poem of Ecstasy). Pavel Smelkov, Principal Conductor of the Primorsky Stage, will take the podium.

On New Year’s Eve, the Chamber Hall will present the New Year’s Little Blue Light concert program (December 29, 30 and 31, 2022). The opera company and the symphony orchestra artists will give theatrical concerts in the style of the Soviet-time Little Blue Light shows, with the appropriate repertoire and design.
