Historical Opera A Life for the Tsar in the November Repertoire of the Primorsky Stage

The November repertoire of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre is going to be rich and very diverse. The first Russian opera, A Life for the Tsar, will be performed twice in Vladivostok.

The November playbill will be opened on November 3, 2022 by Giselle, a romantic ballet by Adolphe Adam flawlessly staged by the Mariinsky Theatre.

During the holiday weekend, the first classical Russian opera, A Life for the Tsar by Mikhail Glinka, will be performed on the Primorsky Stage (November 4 and 6, 2022). The production will be specially brought to Vladivostok for just two nights. The plot is based on the heroic story of a simple peasant Ivan Susanin, who has sacrificed himself to save the life of Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich. On the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre, the historical drama gained a new breath in 2004 in a bold production, recognized by critics as the most extraordinary one. In Vladivostok, the opera was performed in the summer of 2022, as part of the program of the International Mariinsky Far East Festival. In this production, the actual problems of civil society, personal responsibility and morality come to the fore. Soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre (St. Petersburg) Yuri Vlasov, Yekaterina Krapivina, Antonina Vesenina and guest soloist Kirill Belov will specially arrive in Vladivostok to perform the primary parts.

The playbill for the first weekend of the month will be complemented by two performances of Rodion Shchedrin’s dynamic and vibrant ballet The Little Humpbacked Horse that will take place on November 5, 2022. This performance is a successful blend of a fascinating, magical plot, so loved by kids, extravagant and stylish designs, inventive choreography and emotional music. The subtle humor will be understood by children and appreciated by adults.

The traditional special project for the youngest audience, “Mariinsky – for children”, in November will be represented on the Primorsky Stage by operas Murych the Cat (November 5 and 19, 2022) and The Little Prince (November 12 and 26, 2022). Childhood is the right time to look for answers to the most exciting and important questions. In these brilliant adventure stories the main characters in simple yet very touching manner, will answer the main questions of life. Vivid productions by Alexei Stepanyuk, merry characters, laconic stage design, beautiful voices of the Theatre soloists, and music written especially for young audiences, all this awaits you in the Chamber Hall of the Theatre.

The ballet playbill of the month includes La Bayadère (November 10, 2022) and Don Quixote (November 26, 2022) to the music by Ludwig Minkus. The choreography of these performances, staged by the legendary choreographer Marius Petipa, has been going on unchanged for many years and continues to fascinate with its grace and accuracy, which remain practically untouched. Petipa’s legacy lives on in other classical productions, including Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake (November 17, 2022) and The Sleeping Beauty (November 24, 2022).

The fourth and fifth premieres of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Mazepa will take place on November 18 and 20, 2022. The truly tragic story of the Kochubei family unfolds against the backdrop of the victory of Peter I over Charles XII of Sweden in the Great Northern War, and the defeat of Hetman Mazepa. The production very accurately illustrates historical events with large-scale, luxurious scenery and authentic costumes.

On November 25, 2022, the Primorsky Stage will present perhaps the most stylish production of the Theatre and the most famous opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, The Tsar’s Bride. The plot is based on the historical episode of Ivan the Terrible’s third marriage. Who is she, someone’s rival, or an innocent soul ruined by envious people, or maybe all together? Marfa Sobakina is that very Tsar’s bride who has left behind many dozens of beauties in the show of brides for the Tsar Ivan the Terrible. Guest soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre Ivan Gyngazov, performing the part of Ivan Lykov, will participate in the production together with soloists of the Primorsky Stage.

On November 27, 2022, the Theatre will present The Queen of Spades by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, a large-scale musical canvas based on the novel of the same name by Alexander Pushkin. Yuri Temirkanov’s production has become a standard example of classical opera directing, having received international recognition and a happy life on the theatre stage for many years. The central figures of the Catherine’s era St. Petersburg are reproduced in the performance with perfect accuracy: from the statues of the historical Summer Garden to interior details and costumes. In November, the part of Herman will be performed by the guest soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre Ivan Gyngazov.
