The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre – one of the most modern theatres in Russia and in the Asia-Pacific Region, built for the APEC Summit in 2012. Picturesquely located on the hills (“sopkas”), overlooking the Sea of Japan, the theatre building, with its original architectural design and panoramic glass facade, has become one of the major tourists’ attractions in the Primorye region. An intense repertory schedule, distinctive acoustics and high professionalism of performers have made the Primorsky Stage one of the most visited theatres in Russia and the APR countries.

Every year, it hosts premiere performances of opera and ballet productions, gives venue to top performers of opera, ballet and instrumental music from Russia, Asia-Pacific countries, Europe and America. Among them are prima ballerinas and principal dancers Ulyana Lopatkina, Diana Vishneva, Vladimir Malakhov, Natalia Osipova, Kimin Kim, Vladimir Shklyarov, Viktoria Tereshkina, Ekaterina Kondaurova, opera singers Ana María Martínez, Albina Shagimuratova, Ildar Abdrazakov, Elena Stikhina, Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar, violinists Leonidas Kavakos, Nikolaj Znaider, Clara-Jumi Kang, pianists Lucas Debargue, Nobuyuki Tsujii, Seong-Jin Cho and many others.

The theatre houses three stages: the Great Hall, the Chamber Hall and the Summer Terrace.

The Great Hall of the Theatre is intended for major opera and ballet productions, large-scale symphonic and choral concerts. Built in a classical Italian horseshoe shape with four piers of balconies, the Great Hall can seat up to 1356 audience members. Modern stage facilities make it possible to stage the most technically challenging performances. Natural materials – custom-made wood panels in light colours and suspended guy-wired ceiling – give the Great Hall a feeling of ease and airiness of the space, creating the atmosphere of maximum comfort for the audience.

The unique acoustics of the Hall, developed on the basis of the state-of-art Japanese technologies, allow the sound to disperse evenly throughout the listening space, remaining pure in all corners of the Hall. Excellent acoustics of the Great Hall have also been noted by all musicians who have ever performed on its stage, including Valery Gergiev, Yuri Bashmet, Denis Matsuev, Hibla Gerzmava, Maria Guleghina, Vladimir Galouzine, Sergei Leiferkus. The Great Hall multi-purpose foyer comprises the cloakroom, cafes, a souvenir shop, and serves as a display area for various exhibitions held there on a regular basis.

In the foyer of the Great Hall there are a cloakroom, a souvenir shop, and several buffets. It is also an actively used exhibition space, where various exhibitions and cultural events are regularly held.

The Chamber Hall has a total of 305 seats. It is used for chamber opera performances, “meet-the-artist” educational and educational events, autograph sessions, programmes for children and master-classes. The Chamber Hall interior in the shades of green creates a cosy setting, while its structure makes it possible to transfer the stalls and the circle into a unified space aligned with the stage, where the audience can be a part of what is going on on stage.

The Summer Terrace is designed for easily accessible open-air concerts and performances and is used from the beginning of spring till the end of autumn.
