Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre to Host the International Theatre Olympics in 2019

The special program of the Theatre Olympics in the Far Eastern Federal District will start in Vladivostok on the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The Creative Laboratory of Theodoros Terzopoulos, Chairman of the International Committee for the Theatre Olympics will show The Return of Dionysus (ATTIS Theatre, Athens, Greece) on the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre for professional audience on June 8 and 9. The play will be acted by young actors and senior students of Vladivostok arts universities. The main plot is the development of a unique author’s method of interaction with the actor. Theodoros Terzopoulos is a well-known Greek director, one of the leaders of the European stage, theatre theorist, theatre teacher, the author of his own scenic acting method. He is a leading theatre specialist on the ancient Greek tragedy.

On June 9 and 10, Valery Fokin’s The Marriage, based on the same-name play by N.V.Gogol (Alexandrinsky Theatre) will be shown on the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The performance is the winner of the Russian National Theatre Award, the Golden Mask.

In the off-program of the Theatre Olympics, the regional audience will see a one-man performance belonging to the Monologues in the Tsar’s Foyer cycle by the outstanding masters of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. On June 8, the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will host People’s Artist of Russia Igor Volkov who will show the An Anxious Box Keeper’s Sketch-Book play based on short stories by M.Zoshchenko. Entrance to this performance will be free for viewers.

One of the key events of the Year of the Theatre in 2019 is the Theatre Olympics attracting the best theaters from abroad, national theaters from Russian regions. The audience will also have a chance to listen to lectures and master classes by the world’s leading theater personalities.

The main venue of the Olympics will be the Alexandrinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. The Olympics will host performances from 21 countries, along with the best performances of the Russian theatres; the program will consist of more than fifty Russian and foreign productions. The goal of the Olympics is to showcase the best achievements of the present-day theatre, the unity of various theatre schools, and the dialogue between their founders and the spectator.
