Festival Rimsky-Korsakov – 175 on the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre

On March 18, 2019 marks the 175th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. For this anniversary, the Mariinsky Theatre has prepared an extensive festival program “Rimsky-Korsakov – 175” which will embrace St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Vladikavkaz and Moscow. A number of performances and special concert programs of the Primorsky Stage will be devoted to the Russian classical composer.

On March 22, at 19:00, a big gala concert dedicated to the composer’s heritage will be held in the Great Hall of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The soloists of the opera company, instrumentalists, the choir and the symphony orchestra of the theater will present a unique program from both popular and lesser-known works by Rimsky-Korsakov. Among them, there are The Spanish Capriccio and The Fairy Tale for orchestra, Svitezyanka cantata, and a concert for trombone. Pavel Smelkov will take the conductor’s podium.

The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will also be holding its own productions of famous Rimsky-Korsakov’s operas. For March 17, The Tsar’s Bride is scheduled, historical opera drama directed by Vyacheslav Starodubtsev. On March 31, the audience will enjoy The Tale of Tsar Saltan, an opera to Pushkinian plot directed by Daria Panteleeva.

The composer’s chamber music will be presented on March 31 in The Epoch of Rimsky-Korsakov concert in the Small Hall. The artists of the theater will perform several rarely performed instrumental ensembles of Rimsky-Korsakov (string sextet and quintet for piano and wind) and two vocal cycles, By the Sea and To the Poet (soloists Alexander Gontsa, Liliya Kadnikova).
