Grandiose symphony programmes at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in March

The spring symphony playbill of the Primorsky Stage features outstanding works from the treasury of European musical heritage. In March the Great Hall of the Theatre will host concerts, focusing on the works by the great German romantic composer Johannes Brahms. The solo in one of them will be performed by Pavel Milyukov (violin), a musician with a brilliant international career, a prize-winner at the International Tchaikovsky Competition.

On 22 March at 19:00 the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage under the baton of Pavel Smelkov will present Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 and celebrated Violin Concerto.

On 18 March at 18:00 Pavel Milyukov will give a solo recital, organized with the support from the St Petersburg House of Music. In the ensemble, he will be partnered by the Grand-Prix winner at International J. Vītols Piano Competition, Pavel Telkov (piano). The concert programme features violin sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schuman, Sergei Prokofiev, as well as Igor Stravinsky’s Divertimento for Violin and Piano from the ballet The Fairy’s Kiss.

24 March 19:00 will see the Primorsky Stage premiere of one of the most monumental and inspired works by Brahms — Ein Deutsches Requiem for soloists, chorus and orchestra. The Requiem is called German because the composer used as a text selected fragments from various books of the Bible translated into German by Martin Luther instead of the canonical Latin prayers, traditional for the genre of requiem. Masterful choral composition and arrangement, expressive orchestral parts and a lofty ethical idea of this work ensured Ein Deutsches Requiem a permanent place in the world performing repertoire right from the moment of its creation. The premiere of the Deutsches Requiem on 10 April 1967 in Bremen brought international fame to the young Johannes Brahms as one of the greatest composers of his time. At the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre Ein Deutsches Requiem will be performed by the Theatre’s Chorus and Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pavel Smelkov. Soloists — international award-winning opera soloists Alina Mikhailik (soprano) and Alexander Gontsa (bariton).
