The first premiere of the year at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre — the opera Mavra by Igor Stravinsky

17 and 24 February will see the premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s comic opera, Mavra at the Chamber Hall of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The libretto was written after Alexander Pushkin’s poem A Little House in Kolomna. The plot is based on a love story of a hussar and a modest girl. To be near the girl he loves, the young man gets into her family house disguised as a cook, Mavra.

Stage Designer Vyacheslav Starodubtsev has used a synthesis of drama and opera theatre and introduced characters which are absent from the composer’s score.

— There is a real opera-buff unfolding on stage, with dressing up in clothes of the opposite gender and unexpected comic moments, commented Vyacheslav Starodubtsev. I think this cheerful one-act opera will be interesting for both connoisseurs of high operatic art and unsophisticated family audiences.
