The Boston Ballet principal dancer Misa Kuranaga to perform for the first time at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre

One of the most renowned Japanese artists, internationally acclaimed Misa Kuranaga will perform the title part in Giselle at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre (2 December). It will be the first performance of the Boston Ballet principal dancer in Vladivostok.

Misa Kuranaga’s dancing career is one of the most brilliant ones among the Japanese ballet artists. After studying at the School of American Ballet in San-Francisco, she joined the Boston Ballet in 2003. During the following six years, Misa Kuranaga rose through the ranks from a corp de ballet member to a principal dancer and became a recipient of gold medals at prestigious international competitions in Switzerland, Russia and the USA.

In 2006, she was named one of “25 To Watch” by influential Dance Magazine. “Misa Kuranaga defies most conceptions of classical ballerinas. ... but she packs everything into one small figure — ... she’s expressive, elegant, and versatile.” noted The Tech’s reviewer, Ray Wang.

In addition to her career with the Boston Ballet, Misa Kuranaga has been a guest performer with the New York City Ballet and the Vail International Dance Festival (Colorado, USA), as well as travelled all over the world, performing in galas. The artist’s repertoire includes leading parts in ballets by Marius Petipa, Rudolf Nureyev, John Cranko, Frederick Ashton, George Balanchine, John Neumeier, Jiří Kylián,William Forsythe and many other celebrated choreographers. In 2017, Misa Kuranaga has been nominated for the prestigious Benois de la Danse award for her portrayal of Tatiana in John Cranko's Onegin and Medora in Ivan Liška's Le Corsaire.
