The Boston Ballet prima-ballerina, conductors from Switzerland and Singapore, premiere of the Russian choral opera Boyarina Morozova — at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in December

The December Playbill of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre presents an intense symphonic programme, featuring performance of the Boston Ballet principal dancer Misa Kuranaga (Japan) and the best productions from Russian and European classical legacy.

The principal guest artist of the month is Misa Kuranaga, the Boston Ballet prima-ballerina, a recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the gold medal in the junior division of the 9th Moscow International Ballet Competition and the gold medal in the senior division of the 2006 USA International Ballet Competition. She will perform the title role in Adolphe Adam’s ballet Giselle (December 2).

The Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage will perform under the batons of guest conductors Mischa Damev from Switzerland (December 13) and Darrell Ang from Singapore (December 27). The intense symphonic playbill will also include New Year’s Eve gala-concerts conducted by the Theatre’s principal conductor Pavel Smelkov, which will take place at the Great Hall of the Primorsky Stage (December 24), at the All-Russian Children’s Centre “Ocean” (December 20), at the Far East Federal University (December 22) and at the House of the Russian Army Officers in Ussuriysk (December 23). The Theatre’s chamber repertoire in December will feature an Evening of Instrumental Music (December 2) to be held at the Chamber Hall of the Primorsky Stage.

A series of performances by the Primorsky Stage ballet company, which has just returned from a successful tour in Seoul (South Korea), in December will include ballets of world heritage: Le Corsaire by Adolphe Adam (December 7), the. ballet-féerie The Sleeping Beauty (December 10, at 14:00 and 19:00) and the legendary Mariinsky production of Swan Lake (December 15) by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The 135th anniversary since Igor Stravinsky’s birth will be honoured with an evening of old and contemporary choreography, centered around one of the composer’s most renowned ballets - The Firebird (December 17).

An operatic premiere of December – Rodion Shchedrin’s Boyarina Morozova, timed to mark the composer’s 85th anniversary, – will be presented by the Tebe Poem (We Sing to Thee) Choral Ensemble from Krasnoyarsk. To date, this production is the only staged performance of this Russian choral opera.

The month’s playbill will open with the so-much-loved by the Primorsky Stage audience refined operatic productions of Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (December 1), Tosca by Giacomo Puccini (December 3). They will be followed by one of the world's most famous operas Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi (December 8) and The Tale of Tsar Saltan by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (December 9), The Love for Three Oranges by Sergei Prokofiev (December 14). The centerpiece of the operatic playbill will be festive performances of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Christmas Eve (December 21, 26 and 28, January 5, 6, 7).

The New Year Celebration events will culminate with Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s fairy-tale ballet-féerie The Nutcracker (December 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31 and January 2, 3, 4).
