Prominent Musicians to Present the Rachmaninoff Cycle in Vladivostok

On 4 and 5 August talented musicians from Russia, Asia, Europe and North America together with the Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre under the baton of Valery Gergiev will present all concertos for piano and orchestra by the great Russian composer in two evenings of the Rachmaninoff Cycle as part of the II International Mariinsky Far East Festival.

In the First and the Second Concertos solo will played by the stars of the I International Grand Piano Competition Ivan Bessonov (Russia) and George Harliono (Great Britain). The achievements of these two wunderkinds are striking: having started playing the piano at six, in several years they already had an impressive list of awards and prizes received at various competitions. Ivan Bessonov’s latest awards include the Grand Prix at the International Frédéric Chopin Youth Competition in St Petersburg and the audience award at the International Grand Piano Competition for young pianists in Moscow.

“British musician George Harliono is a substantially established, technically precise, musical and emotional pianist with his own vision of a composition. I listened to him with great pleasure, having forgotten that it was a performance by an adolescent.” wrote a Belcanto reviewer about George Harliono’s performance at a competition. In 2016 he appeared twice on stage of the Royal Albert Hall in London and his performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory was streamed live on the major European Medici. TV. Channel.

Solo in one of Rachmaninoff’s most grandiose masterpieces — Piano Concerto No. 3 — will be performed by the internationally acclaimed musician, outstanding pianist Sergei Babayan. Musical critics note “Babayan’s excellent technique and his ability to perform compositions with complicated, rich harmonious canvas in an amazingly clear and lucid manner”, as well as his “phenomenal levels of colour and imagination”.

Sergei Babayan is not only a prominent musician, but also a renowned pedagogue, whose pupils will appear for the first time at the Primorsky Stage as soloists in Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No.4 and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Young Canadian musician Dmitri Levkovich, whom Babayan thinks to be “one of the important new romantic pianists of the 21st century”, has already been on tour to every continent except Africa. Dmitri Levkovich will also be giving his recital at the Chamber Hall of the Primorsky Stage (August 2), where he will present his programme featuring works by Frederic Chopin, Domenico Scarlatti, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Ludwig van Beethoven.

Another soloist featured in the evening is young Chinese pianist Ming Xie, who was described by the legendary Martha Argerich as “phenomenal”, and who was granted the Alink-Argerich Foundation Award. In Vladivostok Ming Xie will perform the famous Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, one of the last Rachmaninoff’s compositions.
