The Primorsky Stage Invites Everyone to Spend the Holidays at the Mariinsky

The Primorsky Stage continues to develop one of the Mariinsky Theatre’s priority areas — work with children and young audiences. During the spring holidays, the Mariinsky-4 presents its new project — “Holidays at the Mariinsky”. From 28 March to 2 April the theatre’s repertoire playlist will feature performances for all the family, as well as educational lectures.

On 28 and 29 March, the Primorsky Stage invites everyone to its recent premiere — Christmas Eve by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The opera based on a short story from Nikolai Gogol’s Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka has already become one of the Primorsky Stage most in-demand performances. Brightsets, colourful costumes and interactive activities recreate the atmosphere of a Christmas-time farm, that encounters a series of magic events.

On 30 March, the fairy-tale theme will be continued by the ballet Giselle. A story about love between a peasant girl and the prince is also filled with magic and mystery. The leading part will be performed by South Korean ballerina Soo Bin Lee, who made a memorable debut at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre during the First International Mariinsky Far East Festival in Vladivostok in the summer of 2016.

On 31 March, the young spectators will have a chance to see and hear the last opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart — The Magic Flute. It is a classical singspiel, i.e. an opera with dialogues. The interactive production by the French director Alain Maratrat combines elements of both a drama and an opera. A special role is given to involving the audience into the action, so the young spectators will also have to become participants of the events, happening in the auditorium.

On 1 and 2 April, the Primorsky Stage Playbill features so much loved Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tale of the TzarSaltan. These repertoire performances will be preceded by educational lectures “How is a ballet created?” and “How is an opera created?”

On 1 April, the head ballet-master of the Primorsky Stage will speak about his work on The Nutcracker production.

On 2 April, Stage Director Daria Panteleeva, Accompanist Marina Repina and Chief Primorsky Stage Designer Pyotr Okunev will give a master-class in creating an operatic performance.

During these meetings, young spectators will learn about the opera and ballet production process: about all the theatre’s services and how they interact in staging a new production, about rehearsals and artists’ individual practicing, changes in characters’ interpretation and other interesting details of creating a performance, hidden from the audience.
